Summary on Grant Application Form
It is intended in the proposed work to measure temperature, soot particulate and gaseous species at locations along the axis of a high-pressure combustion chamber, from the injector to the exhaust. These will be in the regions of rising soot concentration (formation dominated), maximum levels and in falling concentrations (oxidation dominated). At the positions of the maxima, which will differ with pressure it is proposed to make radial traverses from the axis towards the chamber wall. This will generate information on the life-cycle and morphology of the soot in relation to the local conditions and species and both pressure and input equivalence ratio will be varied independently; with pressures 1-4 MPa (40 bar) and input equivalence ratios 0.8 to 1.2 lean to rich. It is proposed to add known proportions of oxygen and nitrogen to the inlet air in specified runs and to use pure alkanes and diesel fuel. Different fuel injection equipment will be used. Computations will be made using CFD codes and soot formation and oxidation models.
