The proposed research involves the computer modelling of thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformation behaviour in titanium alloys. The goal is to model the microstructural evolution of the alpha/beta and alpha',alpha'', alpha-2, omega phases as a function of thermal heat treatment, mechanical processing, and alloy chemistry (including specifically O, Al, V, Mo and Si). Problems special for titanium systems such as beta-2 ordering will be examined. Time-temperature-transformation (TTT) and continuous heating and cooling diagrams will be produced. Experimental validation, by measurement of the kinetics of growth and dissolution of alpha and other phases, will be conducted. Deconvolution of the collected data will allow estimation of unknown parameters such as diffusion coefficients and growth coefficients, which are required for the calibration of computer models. The model will be able to predict the effect of large scale segregation on microstructure variations. This project targets at the continuous improvement of an existing material, following the Technology Foresight Recommendation. The modelling techniques will help to make effective use of existing alloys, by reducing conservatism in component design and increasing reliability, and to reduce the time required for the development of new alloys, hence reducing industrial development time.
