Summary on Grant Application Form |
An integrated programme of experimental and modelling work will be performed to build an effective micromechanics model for progressively more complex delamination growth problems. The micro-mechanical processes which interact to produce the interlaminar frature toughness need to be isolated, as far as possible and satisfactory modelling procedures developed and validated against experimental observations. A non-linear finite element model will be developed to model the various phenomena which contribute to the interlaminar toughness including fracture, plasticity, debonding, contact and friction. The effect of these phenomena and the spatial distribution of the fibre reinforcement on the macro-level interlaminar toughness will be investigated. An experimental programme will be performed to provide detailed observations of the mechanics of delamination growth and will include tests condcted in-situ in a scanning electron microscope and fractographic analysis of the fracture surfaces. It is considered essential that experimental evidence is available to guide the model development and validate its performance.
