The proposed research will involve both theoretical and experimental research on the acoustical characteristics of selected reactive and resistive passive devices for the suppression of autonomous combustion oscillations in gas-fired appliances such as domestic central heating boilers.Mathematical models of these components will be incorporated into a general model for the feedback loop that causes the oscillations, and the combined model will be used to predict the optimum locations of the acoustic suppression elements in the combustion system.Experimental studies of these devices will then lead to a comparison of their relative performances in suppressing oscillations. On the basis of this comparison, guidelines for the application of passive devices to the suppression of oscillations will be formulated for the benefit of gas burner and appliance manufacturers.
