Summary on Grant Application Form |
The combustion of clouds of fuel droplets is of great practical importance in gas turbines, diesel and spark ignition engines, furnaces and explosion hazards. Yet it is not yet possible to mathematically model them adequately. Flame propagation through droplet clouds can be higher than that in a fully vaporised mixture. This could be an advantage in the engine context, and a disadvantage in the hazard context. The aims are to utilise the Leeds fan stirred bombs to provide laminar and turbulent burning velocity data on the combustion of liquid aerosols and to make comparisons between these and homogeneous mixtures. Conditions applicable to gas turbines in general, and to altitude relight in particular, will be considered. Additional dimensionless groups will be identified and added to the existing ones used at Leeds. Because of the wide range of constituents in engine fuels, different pure fuels will be studied to provide information relating to the effects of evaporation characteristics. The need also to consider mixtures with different fractions of fuel in the liquid phase also will be addressed. In addition to gas turbines this work should find application in the automotive industry.
