Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will measure the magnetic and electrical and thermal transport properties of selected high Tc cuprates in the form of polycrystalline ceramics, single crystals, melt textured material and magnetically aligned grains in magnetic fields up to 15T. We will assess the effect of the normal state pseudogap in the low energy electron excitation spectrum on the magnetisation and thermal transport in both normal and superconducting states. Compounds to be studied include Bi:2212, Bi2223, T1: 2223 (Nd,Ce)-214 and single layer Hg : 1201, all as a function of carrier concentration which will be varied by appropriate oxygen annealing or cation substitutions and measured via the thermoelectric power. Related single crystal studies will enable the influence of the interlayer coupling on the superconducting properties to be distinguished from effects associated with the normal state pseudogap. Thermal conductivity measurements on cation substituted YBCO crystals will be used to investigate induced superconductivity in the metallic CuO chains and pair0breaking effects. A systematic study of thermal transport perpendicular to the planes will be made on suitable melt-textured samples
