Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed programmes of research is to establish and use a predictive framework to target new ternary and higher order layered transition metal nitrides. By adapting our synthetic methodology to allow access to different compositions and by developing our knowledge of the structure/property relationships found in nitrides, we will target new compounds both with structures that are unique to nitrides and those with analogues in other areas of solid state chemistry. A main point of interest will be the quest for materials with interesting electronic or magnetic properties, but our over riding aim is to try and comprehend how the structure and bonding in nitrides dictates both their chemical and physical behaviour and to contrast these aspects with better-elucidated areas of solid state chemistry (e.g. oxides and carbides).
