Summary on Grant Application Form
Wind-tunnel tests carried out at City University have shown that a spanwise row of small jets, each inclined to the surface and skewed to the direction of the main flow, can increase lift and reduce profile drag of high-lift systems. The jets create longitudinal vortices which enhance mixing across the complex viscous shear flow above the wing and so reduce the adverse effects of the viscous flow. The proposal would concentrate on the fundamentals of the mixing mechanism so that its potential can be assessed and developed. Two numerical models would be developed interactively with experiments. The first would be used to study in detail the generation of the vortex and the jet/vortex/shear-layer mixing process, and how these can best be optimised. The second model would be used to study the global effects of the jets on the wing system's lift and drag characteristics. Sufficient experimental results exist for the initial development and validation of the models. The new experiments would first explore possibilities emerging from existing work and then follow up leads from the numerical predictions.
