In theory small amounts of surface suction can greatly enhance the stability characteristics of an attached boundary layer, and thereby reduce the drag and operating costs of civil aircraft. At Southampton there are complementary experimental and theoretical research programmes on the application of the automatic control of boundary layer transition. This research will continue the theoretical study of the design and control of the suction distribution on aerofoils and nacelles, with the aim of developing methods for optimising the distribution of suction panels (both in number and position) while minimising the power requirements of the system as a whole. In addition, the methods will be validated by comparison with results from the ongoing experimental programme at Southampton, including those from the study of a two metre chord aerofoil with an optimally controlled suction system, funded through a 4th Framework EU research programme. The work will be performed in collaboration with British Aerospace (Airbus), and the methods developed will be linked into their transition prediction routines for high speed wings to generate data which will be compared with the results of flight tests.
