Summary on Grant Application Form
We have been studying the copper-catalysed aziridation of alkenes. This proposal seeks to improve the synthetic usefulness of this reaction. The development of large bite-angle chiral ligands based on tartrate-, binaphtlyl-, and quinoline-derived bisoxazolines is proposed to improve the levels of enantioselectivity attainable in the aziridination of simple alkenes. We also propose to synthesise new nitrine precursors with easily removed nitrogen protecting groups. In order to compare the aziridination reaction with the more extensively investigated enantioselective cyclopropanation of alkenes, we propose to develop the use of azides as nitrine precursors. If successful this will allow us to exploit the existing cyclopropanation catalysts for enantioselective aziridination. A number of possible applications of this chemistry to the synthesis of biologically important molecules such as: alkaloids (by rearrangement of vinylaziridines); pyrroles and allenic amines (via alkynylaziridines); and carbocyclic nucleoside analogues (by aziridination and rearrangement of norbornadienes) are presented.
