Summary on Grant Application Form
Thin slab continuous casting followed by hot charge controlled rolling is revolutionising the production of flat or long steel products. The process conditions are sufficiently different from those in conventional thick slab processing that changes in precipitate nucleation, chemistry and size distributions are inevitable. These changes may occur at any point in the processing cycle i.e. casting, reheating, rolling or coiling. To optimise the process and, in future, predict the effect of changes of composition and processing requires that the microstructural evolution to be understood at the nanometre level. The project will investigate this evolution in a series of related microalloyed V-N steels using analytical TEM including PEELS, EDX and electron diffraction. The effect of Ti. Nb and Zr microalloying additions, reheat temperature and cast slab thickness will be determined. The results will be compared to equilibrium thermodynamic calculations. Non-equilibrium effects will be identified and included in the models. The process conditions, mechanical properties and microstructure will be identified and included in the models. The process conditions, mechanical properties and microstructure will be correlated. The project is supported by British Steel and Vanitac who are making a total contribution of 90,000 total of which 36,000 is in cash.
