Summary on Grant Application Form
Many multimedia resources are currently downloaded over the network in order for the user to better assess their relevance. With better descriptions of potentially relevant resources, this cost in user time and bandwidth might be reduced, and more appropriate resources may be found and utilised. In this project we will adapt techniques from the natural language generation to the problem of generating tailored descriptions of multimedia resources that enable the user to assess their relevance prior to retrieval. We will focus on the particular problem of locating educational resources to meet learning or teaching need. There are emerging standards for meta-data to be associated with educational resources, and these may be used to form the basis of description, which can be tailored to particular needs of the user. Comparisons may be drawn among the set of documents identified by a search engine. The usefulness of these tailored descriptions will be evaluated with teachers, students, and intermediaries aiding teachers locate resources.
