Summary on Grant Application Form |
Following the recession of the early 1990s, the UK aerospace industry currently has a large number of projects. However, it is recognised that the industry must become more globally competitive by reducing manufacturing time and costs: to this end the UK Lean Aerospace Initiative has been introduced to improve aerospace business and manufacturing processes. This proposal complements the UK LAI by involving some aerospace industry SMEs who have had to become lean and agile in order to survive the recession and can be the source of many elements of best practice which can improve the industry as a whole and contribute significantly to the UK LAI.This project work will be undertaken with a number of different aerospace suppliers of various sizes from 37 to 1000 employees, and with customers amongst the most important global prime contractors and first-tier suppliers. In addition to capturing elements of best practice, the project will verify the Lean Enterprise Model and determine the relevance of associated metrics. A lean and agile manufacturing methodology, based on developments in the UK LAI, will be developed for the aerospace supply industry SMEs and introduced to the industry through the partners and other collaborating companies.
