Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal constitutes a fundamental scientific study of the surface electrochemistry of Nickel, utilising recently developed experimental techniques which are capable of probing surface reactions in-situ. We will produce clean, single-crystal Ni electrodes by two methods; cleaning of bulk Ni surfaces and by electrodeposition of thin Ni films onto Au, Pt and Cu substrates. Our primary experimental techniques are scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and surface x-ray diffraction which are complementary in that they supply real space and reciprocal space information about the surface and developing buried interfaces. Having prepared clean Ni electrode surfaces, we will study the initial stages of Ni oxidation and the kinetics and structural evolution of multi-layer Ni-oxide growth. By applying the technique of DAFS, which is an adsorption spectroscopy measurement on a subset of the atoms selected by the diffraction conditions, it wil be possible to probe the Ni oxidation state and local environment of the Ni atoms in the oxide and at the Ni-Ni oxide interface. Finally, we will combine the methods to examine the oxidation and reduction of thin Ni-oxide films.
