Thermal fluctuations are fundamental to magnetisation reversal, but until recently were not included in the micromagnetic formalism. The fundamental physics of magnetism reversal requires and understanding of the effects of thermal perturbations, and in addition to the optimisation of high frequency recording properties provides an important technical imperative. The proposed research firstly aims at developing formalism for the simulation of correlated magnetisation fluctuations (i.e. spin waves). Also it is intended to develop a completely novel approach based on an expression of the equation of motion in terms of the spin waves. The models will be used to study magnetisation reversal at non-zero temperatures in structured films in which long wavelength magnetisation density fluctuations (spin waves) are expected to have an especially important bearing on the magnetisation reversal process. The model will be applied to the study of thermally activated reversal in Patterned media and Magneto-Optical films. Finally, a study of the thermally driven interaction between domain walls and pinning sites will be made.
