A range of alloys and joint geometries are being considered for the manufacture of airframes. The final selection of appropriate designs will depend on the ability to reliably achieve specific mechanical performance criteria. This project will characterise the behaviour of selected weldments through a programme of high sensitivity laboratory experiments and establish an advanced computer model which predicts overall joint performance. In combination, these elements will provide a fundamental evaluation of joint design issues. The project will develop a design methodology for predicting the deformation and fracture behaviour of weld systems fabricated using selected alloys suitable for airframe manufacture.
