Summary on Grant Application Form
Structural vibration threatens the integrity or limits the performance of many delicate instruments mounted on aircraft, spacecraft and other vehicles. Conventional passive isolation and damping can reduce the vibration to some extent, but considerable improvements in performance can be obtained with active vibration control. The multiple actuators and sensors which are required to control flexible structures have previously been connected to a single central control unit, whose operation has been fixed at the design stage. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the behaviour of a modular active vibration control system in which the actuators, sensors and processing power are integrated in a number of self-contained modules, which could eventually be mass produced. The modules would communicate together and implement a hierarchical control strategy, based on measurements carried out by the modules on the structure to be controlled, which would involve global control at low frequencies and local control at high frequencies. By continuously monitoring the response between the modules the condition of the structure could be monitored and the integrity of the individual sensors and actuators could be determined, with changes being made in the control strategy implemented if failures were detected.
