This proposal seeks to advance current technology for condition monitoring by addressing two critical and related aspects. Firstly, it is proposed to investigate different ultrasonic sensors and actuators based around two different technologies capable of embedment; (a) flexible piezoceramics and (b) guided fibre systems. These devices will require minimum electronic interfacing and will ultimately be suitable for integration within a structure using standard miniaturisation methods. The use of ultrasound confers a significant advantage over most other modalities in that each transducer should be able to interrogate an overall volume much larger than itself, and if properly integrated, will enable monitoring of the host structure under dynamically loaded conditions. The second important issue involves the communication link between individual sensors and a host controller and here it is proposed to investigate integrated antenna systems for wireless data transfer. The project is a joint collaboration between the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (Ultrasonics and Communications Groups) at The University of Strathclyde, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College. Industrial collaborators are BG Technology and British Aerospace. The overall aim of the research is to demonstrate the practical effectiveness of a remote instrumentation system for structural monitoring.
