Summary on Grant Application Form
A Network will be set up to develop the expertise to process structured organic-inorganic interfaces. These are functional materials required for the production of advanced chemical sensors for use in environmental monitoring, in the chemical industry and in healthcare. The Network will initially involve 17 academic groups, who already have substantial support for related activities and 14 industrial companies with interests in exploitation of the new science and technology in innovative products. The network will combine strategically timed workshops with on-going exchanges via the internet. This will enhance existing activities by provision of new insights and by the sharing of facilities. But the main aim will be to formulate grant proposals to support new collaborative projects addressing strategically important issues connected with the deposition of organic materials on inorganic substrates such as semiconductors, metals and magnets grown by MBE, essential knowledge for the development of nanotechnology. A novel element will be the role of the UK Institute of Nanotechnology in dissemination of information about the Networkto the public and informing the Network about developments in nanotechnology generally.
