Design to utilise post-buckling reserve in stiffened panels with lead to skin buckling ahead of stringer or overall buckling. Backup analyses for such designs presently run into difficulties. Skin buckling is like that of a long plate; critical loads tend to bunch, meaning that in tracking a stable post-buckling path, criticality in alternative modes may quickly be reached leading to the possibility of mode jumping. This is known to depend on boundary effects, and the possibility also exists of interaction with overall buckling. FE analysis carries inherent difficulties in tracking such solutions. The proposed collaboration between Cardiff and Bath will investigate these effects by taking advantage of contrasting areas of expertise. The software, VICONOPT, developed at Cardiff, will be extended to permit design that allows for post-buckling strength. Bath will effectively monitor and audit these extensions, by both analysis and experiment. A reliable FE model will be developed in full awareness of possible nonlinear pitfalls. Any interaction between overall and local buckling, with the latter also allowed to localise, will be evaluated, as will the extent of mode jumping. The work will progress in parallel with a programme of experimental testing of optimised panels, to compare with the theoretical predictions.
