Adaptive grid methods have become valuable techniques for the computational solution of PDE's. For problems in one space dimesion, the mathematical understanding is advanced, and significant progress has been made in algorithm development. In 2D, the mathematical understanding might well bedescribed as rudimentary.We shall try to form a framework that will give mathematical control of adaptive mesh generation in 2D. |The main purpose is to utilise our increased understanding to enable us to produce solutions of steady and unsteady problems that satisfy a specified error tolerance. The aim is to construct good quality meshes and approximate solutions in an efficient manner. The study will cover smoothing, mesh quality, nonlinear solvers, time-step control. To demostrate the usefulness of our methods we shall test them on challenging convection-diffusion and reaction-diffusion model problems.
