Superconducting technology is now mature enough to develop microwave filters to exacting specifications. However, to date most of the filters developed across the world are simple designs that use commercial design software. This application considers the most modern filter designs of quasi-elliptic response with group delay equalisation to meet the most demanding specifications. New design techniques will be developed specifically for these new superconducting filters.The design and implementation of the new types of superconducting microwave filters will use mobile communications base stations as a vehicle for exampleric specifications. Three main types of filter will be considered. (1) Cascaded quadrature (2) Cascaded triplet (3) Canonical. All three types of filter will be implemented. The designs will focus on four main improvements from other work ie (1) Ease of tuning, (2) Better and controllable selectivity (3) Group delay equalisation (4) Narrow bandwidth. New, types of resonators, with novel coupling mechanisms will be used in these filters to achieve a performance not attained elsewhere in the world.In addition to looking at filter designs which ease this problem, cryogenic tuning will be investigated with mechanical and piezoelectric actuators. The development of new tuning algorithms will also take place.
