Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall objective is to investigate the design of an OXC that has the required functionality to support undersea photonic networking and significantly enhance the performance of undersea systems. The design will use state-of-the-art passive and active optical components to utilise the most appropriate traffic management by intelligently routing individual wavelengths, protection and network restoration schemes in the optical layer. Theoretical and experimental studies will be undertaken to investigate and demonstrate an advanced and practical solution to the design of a scalable OXC suitable for undersea deployment. Issues concerning the concatenation of the preferred solution will be modelled and evaluated using a recirculating loop. The full functionality of the demonstrator will be tested in a real time trial.
