Summary on Grant Application Form |
We have suggested that photonic packet switches based on the generalised knockout principle can uniquely utilise the parallelism and connection density made possible by free space optical interconnections. They may be implemented with optical and/or electrical interconnections and using space, time or wavelength channels. Here, we focus on the fundamental design issues of silicon VLSI based optoelectronic switches operating between vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and silicon photo detectors. (referred to as VIVALDI)Optical fan-out is now widely being researched for related switch fabrics, but choices must be made between beam steering and replication. Fan-in may be optical or electrical. These issues and the merits of a variety of implementations will be investigated by switch simulation. We further propose to design a proof-of-principle VCSEL switch demonstrator, with a view to a further proposal during the second stage of a overall 2.5 year programme.
