It has been found empirically in a LINK programme that large additions of X are able to ductilise a beta Ti alloy which is otherwise very brittle. The explanation for this ductilisation is not known and it is planned to carry out detailed analytical transmission electron microscopy and Auger measurements in an attempt to explain this unexpected observation. In addition it is planned to investigate whether the same effect is observed in some other strong beta Ti alloys. If the mechanism behind this exciting observation can be isolated it is possible that the same concept could be applied to a range of Ti alloys.This programme aims to carry out detailed microstructural observations on the alloy developed through the LINK programme, but melted to contain controlled amounts of oxygen, aluminium and element X. these observations will be extended to a number of selected beta alloys.
