Summary on Grant Application Form
We will pursue molecular studies of a variety of scientifically and technologically challenging heterogeneous systems using Raman spectroscopy and microscopy with an emphasis on overcoming fluorescence constraints, particularly in organic systems and on achieving high spatial resolution. The research is multi-disciplinary and the methods will link several areas of the University's current research interests in the physical, chemical, electronic and electrical engineering, biological and medical fields. This includes molecular and spatial characterisation of synthetic and natural polymers, ion implanted semiconductors and strained lattice systems, degradation mechanisms in semi-crystalline and amorphous polymers, differential degradation in advanced composite materials, mapping the distribution of active sites on individual catalyst particles, protein-lipid interactions, the characterisation and spatial differentiation of cancer cells and new studies on the fate cardiovascular polymer implants in the human body.
