Summary on Grant Application Form
50% funding is requested for a high-performance Charge Coupled Device camera. This will be mounted on one or other of two new Differential Scanning Calorimeters being donated by Mettler Toledo, and the combination used to set up a DSC/Chemiluminescence/Imaging facility. This will support a significant degradation research group and other groups in Polymer Science and in Physics.Simple DSC/CL will be developed as a tool for analysis of oxidation in polymers, oils (both mineral and food) and coatings, with the aim of developing better induction time tests and new methods based on inert atmosphere CL detection of peroxides.Imaging CL will be developed as a routine tool for multi-sample analysis of degradation, allowing work at lower temperatures than is possible with conventional CL.Imaging will also be developed for single-sample profiling of heterogeneous oxidation of thick samples, of blends and of polymers at interfaces with metals.High pressure applications of both imaging and CL/DSC will be developed for routine testing of oils and other volatile materials.
