Summary on Grant Application Form |
Optical fibres have extensive applications in telecommunications where they provide transmission, as well as functional ability, such as amplifiers, switches, channel add/drop multiplexers. Fibres find application in optical sensing, particularly in oil wells and seismic applications, as well as providing some very interesting new solid state high power lasers delivering powers up to several hundred watts. The preform lathe is essential to produce special fibre structure which enable this research and support the extensive ORC groups engaged in these areas. The ORC is well known as one of the world's foremost fibre foundries.
