A trapped mode is a free oscillation of finite energy within an unbounded domain. The project is an investigation of trapped modes in water waves and acoustics. The term 'trapped mode' arose because the fluid motion is primarily confined to the vicinity of the structure and decays to zero at large distances.Trapped modes exist only at a discrete frequencies and are associated with resonances in forced initial-value problems. Excitation at or near trapped-mode frequency will result in large oscillations that may cause considerable damage to a structure. Notable examples of trapped modes occur in offshore structures and in turbomachinery.It is important to know (a) whether a given structure can support a trapped mode and (b) the consequences for the structure if the trapped mode is excited. Previous research has focussed mainly on analytical investigations of trapped modes. The main aim of the present proposal is to develop numerical algorithms that can be used to further the understanding of the geometries which can support trapped modes, investigate the physical importance of trapped modes, and inform further analytical work.
