Data from the direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow are to be analysed by both conditional sampling and discrete wavelet transforms in order to assess the scale dependence of the spectral flux of turbulence kinetic energy. The results are then to be used to construct a wavelet-based model of the subgrid stresses required for large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent, wall-bounded flow. The essence of the approach comes from previous work which suggests that spectral flux is localised in both Fourier and real space, and therefore best represented by a wavelet formalism. Such an approach would avoid the use of a conventional eddy-viscosity which is absolutely dissipative, and therefore unable to represent physical effects such as backscatter , the transfer of energy to lower wave number, in the direction opposite to that of the mean transfer. The complementary requirement in LES for accurate, time-dependent surface boundary conditions will also be addressed by the use of other established techniques to identify 'universal' contributions to the wall shear stress, thereby establishing correlations between it and turbulence structure. Improved surface boundary conditions would reduce the meshing requirement for the near-wall region, thereby offering the opportunity of accurate simulations at high Reynolds numbers.
