We propose to measure lattice vibrational properties of the high phases variety of technologically important materials by micro-Ramon spectroscopy in the 100-Gpa range using diamond-anvil cell. materials must exhibit at least one Ramon-active phonon and will include selected transition metals, the metallic and semiconducting metastable phases of Si and Ge as well as metallic hcp xenon at high pressure. Knowledge of vibrational properties is essential in deriving the elastic and thermal properties of high pressure phases, and served to elucidate the role phonons play in various types of structural and electronic phase transitions. By comparing the experimental data with predictions of corresponding first-principles calculations, it is possible to test the reliability of the different computational methods and the likely range of application of these methods in cases where no experimental data are available.
