Summary on Grant Application Form |
Organic-inorganic hybrid compounds have many potential applications in the fields of ion exchangers, sorbents, catalysis, and as ionic conductors. Some of the most studied systems in this area are layered metal organophosphonates, which form structures consisting of alternating organic and inorganic layers. The majority of this work in this areas has focused on compounds containing tetravalent cations, but has more recently has seen extension to divalent and trivalent cations. In the work that we will undertake here, we propose to expend this study to systems containing more than one metal within the metal phosphonate layers, wither where both types of metal cations are in the same valence states or else where they have different valences, through synthesising along tow lines using mixed-metal hydroxides and hydrotalcites as precursors, respectively. Full structural characterisation of all materials will be carried out. We will investigate how, through control of both the composition and metal ordering within these materials, we can generate much sought after regular porous structures (either from direct synthesis or through subsequent structural modification) and investigate their application in sorption and catalysis, and also how control of the metals present can modulate proton conducti0on and ion exchange properties of these new materials.
