Summary on Grant Application Form
This research project aims to investigate and viability of integrated and optimised active and passive noise control methods in the design of light weight structures. This will involve considerations of novel passive noise transmission and active control systems design during an optimisation study carried out using evolutionary search methods. The passive transmission analysis will be based on the latest vibrational energy flow methods while the active control strategies will make use of modern robust control theory. The calculations carried out will be used to design a large model scale structures on which realistic experiments can be performed. The overall design parameters used will be based on information supplied by industry and the resulting design approaches assessed by the industrial collaborators in a practical setting. This work proposed seeks to demonstrate that an integrated approach to noise control can provide significantly greater performance then the use of either passive or active approaches separately or both in sequence.
