Summary on Grant Application Form
Electrospray time of flight (TOF) mass spectrometry presents numerous opportunities for developing and exploiting the coupled use of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry while at the same time providing high level, easily used support for synthetic chemistry. In collaboration with Micromass, Waters Corp. and X-tec we plan to use the LCT-TOF mass spectrometer to develop the novel technique of capillary electrochromatography-mass spectrometry and to find new approaches for sampling from reactive gases into a mass spectrometer. The mass spectrometer will be a key technique in the optimisation of cascade reactions in combinatorial synthesis of large numbers of compounds with applications in the agrochemical, pharmaceutical and fine chemicals industries. In addition, the instrument will be used to provide open access support for synthesis and analytical chemistry. This will include interaction with EXPRESS, a Leeds spin-off company, in the development of techniques for the analysis of high value compounds obtained by supercritical fluid extraction.
