Measurements will be made of the correlation between the pulse shape and the energy deposited for gamma radiation interacting with large germanium and CdZnTe semiconductor detectors. The method proposed is to measure on an event by event basis many correlated parameters. Multi-dimensional analysis of the data is expected to lead to an improved performance of the detectors. For large volume germanium detectors the aim is to determine the position of the first interaction to an accuracy of about 5 mm. This will lead to a significant improvement in the sensitivity of nuclear structure physics experiments carried out with large arrays of germanium detectors. There should be an improvement in the peak to background performance of the detectors which will be of interest in the use of geramanium detectors to monitor nuclear waste and in environmental applications. Similar measurements will be made on CdZnTe detectors with the aim of produting better energy resolution for higher energy gamma radiation without loss of efficiency.
