Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal addresses the nature of the emitting species in conjugated polymers, oligomers and molecular materials employed as the active species in electroluminescent display devices. The emitting species in EL devices is often the same as that observed in photoluminescence studies of the same material. Using quantitative time-resolved and steady state photoluminescence spectroscopy we will investigate the efficiency with which the emitting species is formed and the mechanisms that control the rate of decay. Factors such as the chemical structure and the material morphology will be studied in both solid and fluid solution and in thin films. The influence of intrinsic and extrinsic quenching sites in thin films will be investigated and hence provide a means of probing the mobility of the excited states. In a device environment the material will be in contact with and confined by electrodes, such as metals and ITO, as well as other materials used to aid charge transport. We will examine the influence of these species on the luminescence properties of the material. We will also examine the role of stimulated emission as a competing excited state decay mechanism.
