Summary on Grant Application Form
The gyratory compactor will further consolidate the ability of the Highways Engineering Research Group (HERG), University of Ulster, to predict bituminous mixture response to stimulated in-service conditions. This will meet certain of the basic and strategic priorities identified by Foresight including better materials and a cleaner and sustainable world. The gyratory compactor will prepare test samples and assess their fundamental properties according to to newly specified American Superpave requirements and to pending mandatory European CEN criteria. Due to the cost of this equipment it is intended that not only will it be a valuable research tool to continuing post-graduate research at the University of Ulsterbut also to the local and national highway engineering industry. It is unlikely that this would otherwise be made available to further assist HERG in understanding the fundamental properties of bituminous mixtures, nor to providing R&D support to the local and UK highways industry.Start Date: January, 1999Period: 3 years
