Summary on Grant Application Form
Sophisticated numerical models of blood flow through heart valves are starting to emerge which are able to take account of real fluid flow phenomena in a much more accurate manner than previously. At the same time, 3D finite element models of leaflet valves have been developed to estimate bending stresses in the leaflets which are believed to be the main cause of calcification and pre-mature cracking of both bioprosthetic and artificial leaflet valves. The proposed research aims to combine the fluid flow and finite element approaches in order to develop an integrated dynamic model of flexible leaflet prosthetic valves. Such a model will, for the first time, simulate the complex fluid-structure interactions that occur in leaflet valves and will result in much more accurate predictions of binding stresses. This in turn will lead to more durable designs of both biological tissue and synthetic heart valve prostheses which are less prone to calcification and surface cracking.
