Summary on Grant Application Form
Taking VCSELs as a case study, we will examine critical points of the processes of optoelectronic semiconductor crystal growth and device fabrication. We will develop theoretical models to understand the basic device L-I-V characteristics, and data from other assessments, and relate these to the material parameters. Analytical tools such as photomodulated reflectance will be developed for use in a process environment. The resulting data and models will serve to identify critical aspect of the process for further development and allows us to design devices tolerant to these parameters. We will also investigate a number of fabrication techniques, such as intra-cavity contacts and oxide/flouride reflector stacks, to reduce the constraints on the high cost process of crystal growth. The resulting devices are expected to perform better and have lower cost than those currently available. Process improvements and analytical techniques developed will be directly applicable to other optoelectronic devices such as LEDs, modulators and simpler lasers.
