TENCELL - Engineering the tissue response to biomaterials.Improved Biomaterials which extend the quality of life of an ageing population have been identified as a key research element of EQUAL. Functionally biocompatible materials, bioactive materials and tissue engineered devices are viewed as attractive approaches for obtaining the appropriate biological and biomechanical responses, which can extend the life of an implant material. In all three approaches it is necessary to study the cellular reactions to the implant in a biomechanically active (functional) system. Tencell comprises a computer controlled cyclic tensile strain system for cell cultures in collagen gels and tissue equivalents, which can be used to study the biological response of biomaterials in a functional environment. Tencell will be used to study three types of biomaterials.(i) The cellular response to submicron wear debris in orthopaedic implants.(ii) The cellular response of skin equivalent models.(iii) The cellular response of tissue engineered aortic heart valves.Start date: 01.04.99Period: 36 months
