We propose to develop techniques to detect, enhance, and measure quantitatively, narrow features inscribed on low contrast, textured surfaces to a variable but relatively shallow depth. To this end we propose to study the phase congruency (PC) theory of feature detection, particularly noise estimation, extension to 2D, and scale space. Specific goals are to develop novel image analysis techniques that we call PC stereo and shadow stereo for application to assist Ancient Historians to read stylus tablets and aerial imagery. We propose an experimental programme of work on stylus tablets, studying the optimal elevation angles for shadow stereo with directional lighting, and using a turntable to combine results from a set of camera azimuthal angles to exploit the anisotropy of character strokes. We envisage the application of cluster analysis to address the problem of multiple texts on a single tablet. Finally, we will suggest some quantitative measures of utility which can be applied to the algorithms we offer the historians.
