Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is submitted under the auspices of the White Rose Faraday Centre as an application for funding through the funds earmarked by EPSRC for fast track release for the programme of the Centre. As such it has the full support and endorsement of the Management Board of the Centre. Adhesives for porous materials (such as paper and board) and non porous materials (such as polymer films) present different needs in terms of the physical properties of the polymers used. The objective of this proposal is to develop a tool-box of the reactive block copolymers which combine the 100% solids approach of hot melts with contact adhesion mechanism of emulsion and solution based products. Block copolymers are attractive because their block structure allows them to be processed as a melt, act as a contact adhesive on application and have a high green strength due to microphase separation. Of added importance is the ability to make the product reactive so that long-term creep stability is dominated by the material being crosslinked. One of the most important applications of block copolymers is as adhesives of otherwise incompatible substrates.
