Summary on Grant Application Form
Knowledge of the way a cell interacts with its surroundings is one of the key areas to developing the newly emerging field of cellular engineering. The aim of this programme of work is to build, test and evaluate a new optical method for observing and measuring the cell-substratum interface. The method will be based on surface plasmon resonance microscopy. This will be developed into a new imaging tool. Cells will be grown on surfaces and their motility and surface interaction studied. in pseudo real time using video capturing and analysis techniques. Quantification of the cell's interaction with a range of chemically modified (and characterised) surfaces will provide invaluable and hitherto unobtainable information on how cells respond to and grow on surfaces.
