Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall aim of this work is to develop a model which predicts a complete microstructural map of multicomponent Al-Si alloys as a function of chemical composition and process parameters, and to simultaneously develop a fundamental understanding of the relationship between specific phases within the microstructure, mechanical properties and service performance, in order to make incremental but significant improvements to existing materials and current processes.Through a multidisciplinary approach combining fundamental microstructural modelling and evaluation, detailed experimental studies on the failure processes in the alloys modelled, and linked to prediction of service performance, we will develop a 'cradle-to-grave' modelling capability for the complex Al-Si class of materials used in piston applications.
