The use of biodegradable polymeric scaffolds to regenerate human tissues has been highlighted as one of the most promising areas of materials/biomedical research for the next century. Methods of using these scaffolds in nerve, liver, skin and bone regeneration have been demonstrated. Scaffolds that can control cell growth and differentiation need to be highly porous, have surfaces that present specific biological ligands, and should have the capability to release growth factors. To date, it has not been possible to produce scaffolds that combine all of the required properties and where fabrication techniques have been developed that partially achieve these properties it is difficult to envisage suitable scale-up procedures.In this research programme new scaffold production processes that generate all of the required material properties will be developed. These processes will employ supercritical fluid carbon dioxide as a clean solvent in which biointeractive scaffolds will be manufactured with biomimetic surfaces and growth hormones incorporated into the bulk. The processes will produce scaffolds at exceptionally low production costs with large batch sizes (kilogrammes scale, if required). This programme will build on technology patented by the University of Nottingham and should establish a strong competitive position for the UK in tissue engineering scaffold manufacturing.Keywords describing this proposalManufacturing, Materials,Medicine, Processing
