Summary on Grant Application Form
At present the widely used injection moulding simulation packages are based on a simplification of flow in the mould cavity, whereby the analysis is reduced to a 2-dimensional problem on the cavity mid plane. Although this approach has been applied to gas assisted and dual injection moulding with considerable success, there are cases where it is inadequate: no existing moulding package includes the SCORIM process. The programme aims to develop 3-dimensional simulations for all three of these evolving injection moulding technologies and to compare these with experimental measurements. The role of the IRC at Leeds, within the global programme, is threefold. Firstly to provide analysis of fibre orientation and fibre length distributions in SCORIM moulded parts for comparison with computer predictions and to guide development of mathematical modelling: this will make use of the unique image analysis facility developed at Leeds. Secondly to provide an input of expertise in modelling flow and orientation in fibre loaded resins and thirdly to aid the interpretation of the experimental trials in relation to the computer simulations.
