Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is to carry out a technology review under the auspices of the White Rose Faraday Partnership in Enhanced Packaging Technology. The review will set out to achieve the objectives listed above. As with all manufacturing sectors, packaging companies make products for customers according to a variety of constraints. To accommodate these constraints and to satisfy customer needs, good scheduling of the production process is required. However, the extent of scheduling practice in the packaging industry is not known and a key first objective of defining the potential of improving scheduling methods in the industry through the adoption of these new ideas based on soft computing methodologies. A further objective will address technology transfer through the development of a computer simulation of a sample packaging facility using ARENA simulation software. The basic simulation will be enhanced by the inclusion of a scheduling tool to illustrate the potential of novel algorithms currently being developed within existing research groups at Sheffield.
