The role of Glasgow will be twofold, as detailed below, in (i) providing core technological support for other members of the consortium (including materials characterisation and microstructure fabrication), whilst (ii) carrying out leading edge research and development into new devices and technologies suitable for system integration.i) The overall programme of all partners within the consortium will rely heavily on the advanced microfabrication and micromachining facilities available in Glasgow. The combination of lithographic equipment for mask design, a dedicated clean room suite, genuine state of the art micromachining facilities and biological laboratories, all within the same laboratory will ensure that there can be a rapid turnaround between concept, design and device testing. In addition, we will use spectroscopic methods, e.g. XPS at RUSTI (Daresbury) to optimise the materials interface, e.g. reducing non-specific adsorption of biomolecules.Our tasks are detailed in project I, J and K, and will be concerned with the development and implementation of new on-chip sensing technologies, micro-fluidic handling strategies and realisation of the interconnect technology for the plug and play modules. We will also design new optical and electrical sensors that can be incorporated into these systems.
