This project will bring together the experienced time-resolved infrared (TRIR) spectroscopy and supercritical fluid group at Nottingham and CLF laser expertise at RAL to develop a new facility to study a wide range of chemical, biological and physical processes. The development of the IR tunable laser stems from recent advances in solid lasers. The Nottingham group has pioneered the application of TRIR to probe organometallic and more recently to organic reaction intermediates and excited states, in solution, polymer films and supercritical fluids. The CLF was the first to apply this technology to ultrafast (ps/fs) transient absorption and time resolved resonance Raman spectroscopy. Over the last 3 years a high repetition rate ps/fs optical parametric amplifier (OPA) system has been developed. This proposal is seen as a natural extension of OPO/A laser technology and relies heavily on the CLFs experience in this area and the recently available mid IR transmitting non-linear optical materials such as AgGaS2 and ZnGeP2. The development is being driven by scientific ideas from the projects investigators but supporting letters from UK scientists seeking access.
