The proposed research aims to develop an improved approach to the experimental stress analysis of complex components, using the principles behind boundary element analysis to interpret results from photoelastic experiments. Photoelastic data (representing principal stress differences and directions) will be captured using a digital camera and will be fitted to the traction and displacement unknowns in a boundary element model. This will provide a physical interpretation of the photoelastic observations and will overcome the problems with existing stress separation techniques when applied to complex geometries and/or contact problems.The proposal will involve developing digital photelasticity technology, developing and unifying the phase-stepping and red-green-blue (RGB) approaches within a computer-c0ntrolled full-field polariscope and digital imaging system. A further aspect will be the object-oriented implementation of the boundary element method. The techniques will be evaluated within a stress analysis of contact within complex splined or curvic joints, a category of problem for which computational stress analysis remains inadequate or unvalidated, and for which results have direct impact on the reliability and performance of propulsion and power equipment especially in aerospace.
